None of those are backups. :?
For Soul Calibur II, it was because of the exclusive characters and my brothers' controller preferences (one prefers the Xbox, and the other prefers the PS2). I bought Prince of Persia: Sands of Time for the Xbox and a friend of mine bought me the PS2 version without knowing that I have the game already. I could've return it, but was too lazy. As for Tetris Worlds, I originally bought the GameCube version, but ended up getting the Xbox version for "free" with the Xbox Live Starter Kit. Before I had my PS2 or Xbox, the GameCube was my only next-gen console. And the only 2D fighter available for it was Capcom vs SNK 2 EO. However, when I finally got the PS2, I bought Capcom vs SNK 2 mainly for the controller (and my Namco stick).
With Guilty Gear XX and Street Fighter Anniversary Collection, I bought the PS2 versions because they came out first. But both games later added Live support once they made the transition to the Xbox, so I picked them up mainly for the online mode. I bought both versions of MGS2: Substance for collective purposes. And I have no idea why I have the Xbox and PS2 versions of Splinter Cell.
