noob in need - PSP Forum

hi folks, i've just recenty got a psp. it has firmware 3.40 on it. now i know i can't safely downgrade but i have no idea what these downloaders, installers and flashers are. any help would be amazing. all i want to do is run homebrew on my psp.
if anyone could explane what these are and what they do, that would be amazing, or if any of you have a link to a relevant site that would be just as cool
