Ok..I am sitting here amazed..completely...Its as if the PSP was built to be used as a portable comic book-for once (and again and again w/ the PSP) I wouldn't change a thing...Here are the details:

So I love manga (mucho Samurai stuff + others) and comics (not superhero - Preacher, Invisibles, Transmetropolitan). When I read about viewing manga/comics on the psp I thought that it would be interesting, but wasn't too excited as often something sux's when trying to adapt a device.

I had recently discovered Bittorent Manga. For the uninitiated these are scanned manga (or any book/comic) - where each page is a image file type ala .jpg (.png too). I pulled down one of my favorite comics Lone Wolf and Cub - Complete-yes 28 books (which I own as well) all digital-so many pages-so many files. I also started pulling down others-GTO (another favorite of mine) and others. The image files average about 100K and there are, obviously, tons.

So I read about PSP manga viewing and I already had a few digitized books. Using the following steps I easily converted hundreds of files into PSP viewable and pushed one book up to my psp.

To convert manga to the psp do the following:
1. Obtain a digitized version of a manga.
2. Download PSPPhoto : http://tokyopia.com/tk/downloads/PSPhoto1.01.zip
3. Download .Net 2.0 (dotnetfx.exe):

4. Double click on the .net 2.0 file to install (this will take a few minutes and require a reboot).
5. After re-boot: Unzip and click on the PSP icon (from pspphoto).
6. Now a cool looking psp will pop up on your screen.
7. Set the destination file from the menu (its obvious so dont worry)
8. Now the cool as hell part-drag the folder containing the manga (or the zip file-now that's cool).
9. PSPPhoto will 'digest' the folder/file and crank out the converted pages.
10. NOTE: your PSP will only view one folder deep( images/mymanga/) so if you manga folders contain sub folders you will want to consolidate (put all the files in one folder and give it the name of the book).
11. Now connect your psp to your PC-drag the newly converted manga folder to you images directory and you are done.
12. When you fire up the psp you will go to photos and then select your folder (book name) and the first image.
13. At first I was so Bummed as the images were too small to read BUT the next day I was bored and started poking around and-there is a nice menu by clicking the Triangle (when in image mode). Choose VIEW mode and WOW-perfect pages - use the thumbtoggle/joystick to view up and down the page-cool little icon pops up to-very neat. Click the right or left (R1/R2) buttons to 'turn' pages.

I am so impressed by how this turned out. Perfect.

Awesome! Are there other comics other than manga through that torrent site? I'd love to catch up on my Transformers comics that I OWN in print form but have no time to read. It'd be great to take them on the go.

Got a few questions for ya:

How big is the file containing a book? On average?

So this creates a series of .jpg files, correct?

This really seems cool. Anyone know of a way to do this on a MAC?

Hi Yall,
Glad you liked the write up.
The file sizes vary, but I recently converted 1 book -10 chapters w/ 226 files (pages). Each page is a .jpg. The entire size is 23.8 megs. the avg .jpg size is about 100k. The pspphoto does all this for you.

So this book I have will fit on your stock 32 meg card even with a few game saves. It is the prequel to GTO and you get to see Onizuka in high school-kool manga if you like GTO.

I will push it to one of my servers and give a few people access (cant do it as a public thing due to a fear of bandwidth charges). Simply reply to this thread and request the link-it would also be cool if you listed a few manga/comics that you are into.

The cool part is its all ready for your PSP-simply copy the folder (w/all images in it) to your images directory on your psp.

That really is awesome.

I think I can create a photoshop Action file that would do the same thing for anyone with Photoshop and more importantly a lot of Mac users. I may even be able to create one that will work as a standalone droplet without having photoshop. You would just drop a folder of images onto this file and it would output correctly sized images. I'm going to play with it and see what I can come up with. Again DM this is really freakin cool. Yeah I said freakin. :D

I tried to make a droplet last night but it rely's too much on your personal computer settings. Damn. Oh well. If anyone with a Mac and Photoshop wants me to tell them how to do this on their machine PM me. Otherwise you can just use DigitalMafia's great tut.

On the other hand...I converted my first set of Sin City comics last night and the idea of reading comics on the PSP is just sweet!
