I dont know what kind of hard drive you've been using, but they contain cache memory. Also a memory stick is a flash memory device, i dont know specific details about the memory stick, but most flash memory devices DONT have cache memory, on board at least. Usually the memory of the host device is used to cache data before its written directly to the card.
The drive does use the memory stick drive as the interface to connect to the psp. Also if you note on the lik-sang site they report loading times from the drive to a psp, as well as write times so it is in fact useful. Though it may not be as fast as a memory stick.

Sorry but I am not buying this. And then this is just my opinion. You can prove me wrong... |
This product aint for everyone, i prolly would never buy it, just because it looks ugly, but its far from useless. Of the places i found in stock prices for the 2gig sticks are going for around $200 usd. Sure, prices will go down but its hard to say when and how much. For people who dont want to wait this is a solution. Also
afaik san disk and sony are the only companies making the memory sticks so i can imagine they'll try to keep the prices the same as long as possible at least untill their ready to release a higher capacity stick.
