Rep Power: 0 | The "PSP Go" Quote:
In an attempt to resuscitate a waning product in a notably emulous market, the powerhouse known as Sony has put forth a new form of portable gaming, the PSP Go. With the corporate aim of Sony to ultimately pull the rug from under the well grounded feet of the Nintendo DS, atop the portable gaming market, a totally revamped Playstation Portable is in the works. The new product is tentatively scheduled to be released October 1st. With a smooth and sleek design accentuating the 3.8 inch LCD screen, Bluetooth compatibility, a 16 GB built in hard drive, a built in microphone and Skype compatibility, the potential for the system is almost limitless. Sony’s Playstation Portable in the past has suffered from a lack of quality titles and as a result, has been overlooked by those in the hardcore gaming community. Many PSP owners have found themselves using the PSP as a mirror, rather than a console. However, Sony has begun to place much more of an emphasis on the emerging market of portable gaming and has realized the potential and the competition. Such an approach has been noted in the recent resurgence of franchise titles and third party titles on the PSP.
Perhaps one of the most marketable features of the PSP Go, is that it brings the already streamlined Playstation Portable, to an even smaller scale, approximately 50% smaller than the original PSP. Compact and powerful, the Playstation Go is set to eradicate the use of the UMD discs typically associated with the PSP by replacing it with flash memory which can be extended up to 48 GB, further bolstering its reputation as a portable media Goliath. Thankfully, games which have been developed prior to the release of the console and those games which will be developed for launch will be available on the Playstation network for download. This however, leads to questions regarding the compatibility of the console and the overall accessibility of the console to new users. The PSP Go aims to impress through innovative design, a new layout and a central focus on online gaming.
The main criticism of the PSP Go, is whether or not the price increase is warranted. Archetypal of Sony, a product oriented approach rather than a market oriented approach has been taken, which illustrates a repudiation of the consumer. Scheduled to be released for the hefty price of $249 in the United States and 249 Euros in Europe, concerns are being raised that the high price margin may exclude potentially interested customers from purchasing the console. Furthermore, controversy has been raised about where exactly the price increase is coming for- many have speculated that the cost increase stems from the addition of the flash hard drive. However, all is not lost for those who are interested in the PSP Go, as some retailers in the United States are offering discounts for those who trade in their old, out-dated PSP models

After reading this, I am actually excited to be the proud owner of a PSP if things are going totally online. My current PSP after having a technical breakdown is acting as nothing more than a mirror. Do you guys think the PSP Go is a step in the right direction? |
