This is why its hard to be nice to the newbs.

The general rule of thumb when it comes to updating the firmware on electronics is you do NOT update unless you are trying to FIX something that the update claims to fix. If the update goes wrong, you can render the hardware useless. So, dont do it without a GOOD REASON.

Because you could brick your PSP, for starters.

Because someone may have hacked Sony's site and put up screwed up firmware.

I'm guessing to permanently damage your PSP.

It means turn your PSP into a brick.

Its not paranoia, its fact. Thats why they require you plug in the AC adapter when flashing. If the power fails in the middle of the flash, you have to send the PSP back to Sony to get it fixed.

Either way, none of these failures are likely. They are just possible. You said "why not" update, I gave reasons why not to. There isnt anything more to it then that.

I'd have to go with what Project GSX said. I usually follow that rule, since updates aren;t always for the best.
